Wairakei Estate lies within the Taupo Volcanic Zone, which generously provides a vast natural renewable energy resource. Unlike hydro and wind generation, geothermal is not dependent on weather conditions and is a reliable and consistent renewable energy source. Steady base load geothermal runs at full capacity 95% of the time.
Wairakei Estate is the home of Mercury’s Ngatamariki geothermal power station. Commissioned in 2013, Ngatamariki currently has the largest Ormat 20MW binary cycle units in the world, producing 82MW.
Mercury generates 100% of its electricity from renewable resources and is one of the world’s largest geothermal power station owners. Its five stations deliver approximately 7% of New Zealand’s overall electricity needs. Three of those stations are owned in partnership with innovative Maori commercial enterprises
