Soil conservation has been identified as a critical factor in the management of the Estate’s resources.
Erosion is the largest source of sediment loss across Wairakei Estate, with the dominant pumice soil being prone to erosion, particularly after high intensity rainfall and land development. All these erosion prone areas have been identified and mapped for progressive retirement and protection.
Wairakei Estate employs a full-time Conservation Manager who recommends and implements appropriate erosion management, targeting high priority areas for planting. In addition, the Conservation Manager’s work includes the identification and management of restoration areas, Estate surveillance, soil stabilisation techniques, overflow land mitigation, catchment support and planting.
