Wairakei takes pride and responsibility for managing and protecting our riparian areas.
Wairakei Estate has nearly 150kms of rivers and streams flowing through it, including 28km of Waikato River frontage. These areas are protected with hundreds of kilometres of fencing and all stock are excluded from waterways across the property. Riparian margins are progressively managed over time to encourage the proliferation of native plant species, along with the eradication of flora and fauna pests.
A specific planting regime is ongoing in the Pueto, Waiwhakarewaumu and Otawheta Catchments to protect water quality and ensure beautification of this area, as well as promoting a biodiversity corridor extending from the Kaingaroa Plateau to the Waikato River.
