Wairakei Estate’s beautification is centered on meeting the environmental needs of the Estate – with a focus on shelter belts, animal welfare and erosion prevention. The extensive native planting programme includes riparian and wetland planting, supports biodiversity and habitats. The tree planting programme is research based, including trialling different species to plant what thrives within a series of micro-climates on the Estate to best meet environmental needs.
Biodiversity within Wairakei Estate is key to providing an environment that enhances water quality and contributes towards beautification.
This approach to all its operations supports the creation and protection of habits for birdlife. Tui, Bellbirds, Fantails, Pukeko, Grey & Mallard Ducks, Dabchicks, Pied Kingfishers, Spotless Crake, and breeding pairs of the rare New Zealand Falcon all make their home on Wairakei Estate.
