Sunday, 24 February 2019 dawned with a cold start to the day bringing wind and rain, however by mid-morning this had cleared. Undaunted by weather conditions 832 Wairakei Estate Ironkidz participants entered into the spirit of the event with determination, good sportsmanship and plenty of smiles. It was great to hear so many of the kids sharing words of encouragement with each other during the event.
There were some amazing spot prizes: a Turangi Adventure Day, Taupo Family Fun Day and a $1,000 bike voucher from Top Gear Cycles were amongst the generous prizes donated.
Highlights included the Monte Vista Superstar Trophy, awarded to the child who shows the most courage at Wairakei Estate Ironkidz. This year this was awarded to 13-year-old Noah Harris, from Waihi Beach. Noah suffered a back injury last year and chose to make competing in Ironkidz part of his recovery process.
Pukeokahu School, near Taihape, won the 7-10 years School Participation Prize and St. Patrick’s Catholic School, Taupo, won the 11-15 years School Participation Prize.
As always, it was a wonderful day for the children their families and for all involved in making sure it was a day to remember. A big thank you to the Wairakei Estate staff who all volunteered their time on Sunday to help support this event: Brett le Lievre, Doug Anderson, Jordy Wilson, Karin Botha, Evan Howard, Alex Gilmour, Robin Gerding, Dean Burns, Richard Aderne, John Isaacs and James Howard.
The next Wairakei Estate Ironkidz will be held on Sunday, 1st March, 2020 so save the date. Entries will open later that year so visit www.ironkids.co.nz closer to the time.
