When Landcorp decided to permanently retire a flood prone section of Deep Creek Farm and purchased 2,000 plants to stabilize the river banks and create healthier waterways and habitats Wairakei Estate stepped up with support.
Wairakei Estate turned to Waipahihi School pupils and asked if they were interested in being involved with such a worthwhile environmental initiative. Though Deep Creek Farm does not fall within the boundaries of Wairakei Estate, the Estate’s Beautification Team prepared the area for planting by pre-drilling all the holes. Wairakei Estate also sponsored the transport necessary to bring the students to and from Deep Creek Farm, on the banks of the Waikato River, where they planted 1,000 seedlings.
Taupo Turangi Weekender recently published this story about all the efforts being made to bring this initiative to fruition.
