Year 5 and Year 6 students from Taupo’s Waipahihi-a-Tia School visited Landcorp’s Renown Dairy Unit.
This visit was organised by Renown Dairy Unit’s Business Manager, Joan Barendsen and Waipahihi-a-Tia teacher, Kylie Barbour.
Once the 20 students arrived at Wairakei Estate they were led on a tour of Renown by Farm Manager, Damien Watson. The students have been studying sustainability and had joined an Agriculture Curiosity Club, however a visit to a real farm offered a unique opportunity to speak to a farmer, get close to some cows, learn about the nitrogen cycle, how a cow’s digestive system operates and what practices Renown Dairy Unit has in place to help protect the land and its waterways. Kylie Barbour says, “We all came away with some new knowledge and a better appreciation of how important dairy farms are to New Zealand”.
